The Fire Horse symbolizes energy\, freedom\, bold action\, and rapid change. \nThe ArtWalk Lunar New Year Celebration feature will feature “Year of the Horse” artwork by local artists and high school students as part of an open Call for Art exhibit. \nAttendees are invited to vote for their favorite artwork in the People’s Choice Award\, with cash prizes presented to the winners. Selected winning entries will be considered for the poster design for the 41st Annual Asian Celebration on July 18 at Alton Baker Park. A selection of artwork will also be exhibited at the Jordan Schnitzer Art Museum in late June for the annual Asian Celebration Art Exhibit and Showcase. \nA brochure and map of the evening’s First Friday ArtWalk locations will be available for pickup at the Pavilion and at participating ArtWalk venues.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a community gathering to honor victims of atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, Japan 78 years ago. The commemoration is planned for August 6 at the Alton Baker Park Peace Pavilion. \nJapanese taiko drumming opens the event at 7:00 p.m. at the park. The event includes speeches\, Obon dancing\, origami\, and Chinese calligraphy\, and concludes at dusk with a ceremony of floating lanterns that are lit to honor those who have died due to the bombing. Each lantern is also a symbol of making a personal commitment to advocate for peace in the world.
