FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ninth Circuit Upholds Detention in Racially Targeted AAPI Burglary Case
The Asian American Council of Oregon (AACO) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Court of  Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has unanimously upheld the pretrial detention of a defendant  charged in a series of racially targeted burglaries against Asian American families.

AACO participated in the case by submitting a community impact letter to the district court and  an amicus brief to the Ninth Circuit, documenting the harms these organized burglaries have  inflicted on Asian American communities and the repeated pattern of release followed by flight.

The Ninth Circuit accepted AACO’s amicus brief and upheld the district court’s detention of the  defendant based on flight risk. “We hope that this decision will help guide courts across Oregon  and the Ninth Circuit in similar cases. The ruling represents an important step toward  accountability, victim protection, and disrupting the cycle of arrest, release, and flight that has  left many Asian American victims without justice,” said Jenny Jonak of the Asian American  Council of Oregon Board of Directors.
